Chapter 37

After a quick visit to Amir’s home, Orrin brought them back to the front line. Crius stood waiting for them under a small umbrella. His white robes were dirtier today, but his smile remained plastered on his face as the party approached him on the Wall.

“Good morning to you all on this hot and muggy day. I see the benefit of having a [Locationist] in your group is not wasted. I dream of my bath and a glass of brandy.” Crius bowed; his spear leaned against the wall behind him.

“Good morning, Crius,” Daniel replied as he advanced to the far side of the Wall. He inspected the enemy camp in the distance. “Any movement yet?”

“They are preparing for another attack, that much is certain.” Crius sighed and rested back against his perch. “We don’t know what they’ll try this time, though.”

The day before, fighters and mages had run the length of the Wall, delivering messages and bringing supplies to needed locations. Orrin realized how quiet it was today.

“Where is everybody?”

Crius yawned. “Anyone not needed is sleeping. We have tents set up behind us and a few small barracks assembled within the Wall itself. If the call is issued, the captains will have their men stationed within three minutes.”

Madi joined Daniel at the Wall’s edge and made a hand gesture in the air. She curled her fingers into circles and looked through an invisible spyglass.

“New spell?” Daniel asked.

“New application,” Madi answered. “Do you see the south embankment where the fence is made of small trees?”

Daniel’s eyes glinted as he used [Telescope]. “Where the three red smudges are pulling a dark smudge?”

Madi gave Daniel a look of such disdain that Orrin chuckled.

“Can you not see that far?”

Daniel blinked and disengaged his ability. “I can see four times farther than normal, but I can’t make out details that far away. Can you?”

Madi shrugged. “I guess my spells are better. Three demons are dragging a large dark sphere of some sort into place. I’ve found about a dozen of them up and down the line behind their fence.”

Crius spoke with his eyes closed. “None of the scouts can make out what they are or where they’re coming from. The demons bring them from the center of camp.”

Brandt reached into a backpack of supplies he’d brought and pulled out a waterskin. He nudged Crius with it.

“I hope this is wine,” Crius groaned with one eye open. He sipped daintily and smiled. “Still hot. Brandt, you dog. They refused to light any fires last night for us for fear we’d make easy targets. One [Fire Mage] tried to brew some using a heat spell and melted the metal coffee press.”

Orrin’s ears perked up. Brandt sighed.

“Yes, Orrin. I brought coffee. It’s for the people who stood watch all night. If you wanted more, you should have brought some.”

Orrin grinned and pulled a carafe out of his [Dimension Hole]. “I’m always prepared.” He put it back.

Brandt grumbled something about checking on supplies and stomped down the stairs.
